Privacy
Short version: we read free/busy from your calendar, never event details. We never read your messages. We never sell anything to anyone.
This policy describes how Seren ("we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, and protects personal information when you use the Seren mobile app and related services. By using Seren, you agree to the practices described here.
1. Information we collect
1.1 Information you provide
- Account identity (via our authentication provider, Clerk): your name, email, phone number, profile photo if present, and the OAuth identifier for the provider you used to sign in (Apple, Google, or phone-code).
- Display name and handle you choose or customize in-app.
- Taste-profile responses: answers to our pairwise-preference quiz ("which sounds more like you"), plus any explicit edits to dietary restrictions and transport modes.
- Availability you mark: the weekly slots you indicate you're free or busy.
- Plans you create and accept: activity category, participants, venue choices, notes, ratings.
- Content you submit: venue nominations, friend invite actions, plan messages if any.
1.2 Information collected with your explicit permission
- Contacts (iOS / Android permission): phone numbers and emails from your device contact book. We send hashed versions only to find friends already on Seren. We never upload contact names. Permission is opt-in and can be revoked in Settings.
- Calendar (iOS / Android permission): busy/free windows from your primary calendar. We do NOT read event titles, locations, attendees, or notes. Only time-slot availability.
- Location (iOS / Android permission): foreground-only coordinates for proximity-aware venue suggestions. We never collect location in the background. Permission can be revoked at any time and the app falls back to home-city matching.
1.3 Information collected automatically
- Device and usage data: device model, iOS/Android version, app version, locale, time zone, crash traces (via Sentry). This data helps us fix bugs and keep the app stable.
- Server logs: request URL, status code, IP address (stored no more than 30 days for security and abuse purposes). We do not use IP for advertising or profiling.
We do NOT use advertising identifiers. We do NOT cross-device track. We do NOT run ad tech.
2. How we use information
- To run the app: match your availability against friends', find venue recommendations, create and confirm plans.
- To secure your account: detect abuse, enforce community rules, investigate reports.
- To improve the app: aggregate anonymized usage to prioritize fixes and features (e.g., "X% of users complete onboarding").
- To contact you: transactional notifications (plan accepted, new match) and, with your consent, occasional product updates. We never send marketing without consent.
We do NOT sell your personal information. We do NOT use it for third-party advertising.
3. Third-party services
We share data with the following vendors to run the app. Each is bound by a data processing agreement and their own privacy policies.
- Clerk — authentication and identity (privacy policy)
- Supabase — database hosting (privacy policy)
- Railway — API hosting (privacy policy)
- Anthropic (Claude) — taste-manifesto generation from aggregated, non-identifying profile data (privacy policy)
- Google Places — venue search and details. Queries include the city you're in and the search term you typed. We don't share user identifiers with Google beyond what their API requires. (privacy policy)
- Sentry — crash reporting and error telemetry (privacy policy)
- Expo / Apple / Google — native OS services for push notifications, auth, and app distribution.
We do not share data with advertising networks or data brokers.
4. Your choices and rights
- Access and deletion: email privacy@ser3n.com to request a copy of your data or deletion of your account. We honor requests within 30 days. Deletion removes your account, friendships, availability, plans, taste profile, and rating history. Aggregate anonymized data may be retained.
- Marketing opt-out: you never receive marketing without opt-in. Transactional notifications (plan accepted, new match) are core to the service and tied to your permissions.
- Permission revocation: Contacts, Calendar, Location, and Push can each be revoked in iOS / Android Settings. The app degrades gracefully.
- California (CCPA): California residents have the right to know, delete, opt out of sale, and non-discrimination. We do not sell data, so the opt-out of sale right is automatic. Other rights can be exercised via the email above.
- EU / UK (GDPR): lawful bases are Contract (running the service you signed up for) and Consent (for Contacts, Calendar, Location, marketing). You have access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, and objection rights. Contact us at privacy@ser3n.com.
5. Children's privacy
Seren is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. Users 13–17 require a parent or guardian's consent where local law applies. If you believe we have collected data from a child, email privacy@ser3n.com and we will delete it.
6. Security
We use industry-standard safeguards: TLS in transit, encryption at rest on Supabase, authentication via Clerk JWTs, per-user row-level security on all data. No system is perfect, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. We will notify affected users of any breach within 72 hours where legally required.
7. Data retention
- Account data: retained while your account is active, plus 30 days after deletion request.
- Server logs: 30 days.
- Sentry crash reports: 90 days.
- Plan history: retained indefinitely while your account is active (the app shows past plans as context).
8. International transfers
Servers are hosted in the United States. By using Seren from outside the US, you consent to data transfer to US-hosted infrastructure. Standard Contractual Clauses govern EEA/UK data transfers.
9. Changes to this policy
We'll update the "Effective date" above when we change this policy. Material changes trigger an in-app notice and an email to your account.
